Identify your target audience (refine your ideas of target audience using demographics and psychographics - see powerpoint for help) (Music Magazine)
My chosen target audience is people mainly male aged between 13-20. I realise this isnt a generic age group but ive chosen this as i feel it benefits to my chosen genres audience and males tend to be into my chosen genre of music more. The socio economic groups that it's aimed at are C2-E my reasoning for this is that the majority of my target audience or either unemployed or on minimum wage jobs are in full education. If I were to place my target audience upon Maslows hierarchy of needs I would place them in the succeed audience as my audience in some cases are a secluded audience and dont really fit in with the generic person of my target age.

Price / how often published etc and why? (relate back to your refined target audience e.g. what can they afford? You must also consider how much the mags that you are competing against charge for theirs, and be able to justify your price etc). (Music Magazine)
I decided on the price of my magazine being £2. The reasons behind this are firstly due to the fact my target audience is youths aged 13-20 (socio economic group C2-E) taking into consideration the vast majority of my target audience will not have paid jobs I think its important to sell my magazine for a reasonable price that they can either save up for or simply ask their parents. Also I've based my price on what would be rival magazines if I were to place mine in this particular area of the music magazine industry such as Kerrang and NME. Taking that into consideration with kerrang being priced at £2.20 and NME magazine being priced at £2.20 also I figure it's importantly to make my magazine cheaper to lure possible buyers in and ensure they stray away from buying others. Another reason for it's cheaper is as my magazine will be new on the market it's important to make sure it's cheaper to ensure better sales.

Question 3 (music magazine)
Rocksound Magazine.
Now I will be using the LIIAR technique of analysis to analyse the front cover , contents page and double page spread of the widely successful monthly music magazine Rocksound.
The first aspect I will be discussing is media language.
Language-
Firstly I will talk about the masthead featured on the front cover. It’s similar to the kerrang magazine I analysed earlier as the title Rocksound is layered beneath the dominating image of Bring Me The Horizon. This is for the same reason I stated earlier which is as it is famous and well known enough it can afford to do this, people will still be aware their look at or holding a Rocksound magazine. Next I will talk about captions. On both the contents page and my chosen double page spread have captions. If you look on my contents page above the singer it states ‘rocksound finally bringing the nips to page 3’ stated as the singers nipple is on show. This is also an example of intertextuality as it refers to the commonly known Page 3. On the double page spread there is also a caption which is ‘I look back at the person I was and shake my head, but I don’t want to go regretting stuff’. This is also an example of a strapline. Unlike the kerrang magazine I analysed, the house style is consistent throughout the front cover, contents page and the double page spread which is dominantly black and red and white. The particular style of the theme of this edition of the magazine is a sort of robotic theme this is because the strapline on the cover ‘Bring Me The Horizon, the past, the present, the future’. which obviously the robotic theme comes from the reference to the future in the strapline. Next I will analyse the layout of each page. The cover page layout is a fairly generic to the music magazine industry. The simple masthead at the top with the cover artist and story layered above with various subheading spread across the lower regions of the page. Also located on the cover page is teasing devices the main one for me the ‘MCR ‘Danger Days’ Win or Fail?’ this makes the possible reader want to look into the magazine and see whether the album will receive good reviews or not. The layout of the contents page follows as a dominant photo of Architects’ Sam Carter with the main features stacked along the right hand side. There are three thumbnails located on the left hand side of the page of three other bands including reference to the cover band. And finally the layout of my chosen double page spread is that the whole left hand side page is dominated by a picture of the lead singer of the cover band Bring Me The Horizon with a quote from the article. The right hand side page simply states the bands names as a headline with the article below. This time unlike in kerrang there is a byline this is located beneath the article headline ‘words: Andrew Kelham’. As stated earlier its apparent the magazine revolves around them as it’s the only article which remains to use the house style and the futuristic theme.
Audience-
I believe the audience for this magazine to be just a bit higher then the kerrang magazine, so 15-22. I think this as it’s appearance gives the vibe of a more mature magazine. But I’d say the socio economic group remains the same for both this being C2-E. But most importantly the target audience for this particular issue is the more hardcore audience and the die hard Bring Me The Horizon fan as it promises a ten page special so this magazine is a must for all BMTH fans. I’d say if it was more targeted to the male fan unlike kerrang magazine I think this because rarely features females on the cover etc. Where as the kerrang magazine reached out to the female fans by promoting a goddess special poster. But rocksound rarely does that. And finally VALS (value life styles). I would say it belongs to mostly 3 but parts of 4 (
3. groups who are inner-directed – I-am-me, experientals, societally conscious; 4. groups who are both outer and inner directed – integrated.)
Representations-
This edition of rocksound magazine mostly represents the stereotypical modern day youthful bands, heavily tattooed and modern hairstyles. This is important to represent youth for the magazine as I previously stated the target audience is a youthful one. I’d say the cover artists are quite a stereotypical band on appearance due them having the a good looking band in general therefore in some cases being a more successful band.
Market research into 3 existing Music magazines that target roughly the same audience as yours (e.g. they are competition). Analyse all of the following for each magazine using LIIAR:(Music Magazine)
Kerrang Magazine
Firstly I will talk about the media language shown on this Kerrang front cover. Upon first glance we immediately notice the Kerrang masthead, the masthead itself is slightly layered under the main image of the four rockstars in some cases this shouldn’t be done but as Kerrang is such a well known and established company they can afford to do this as people are aware of what magazine it is due to it’s hose style.
The house style of this particular edition is black&yellow this represents the brands identity, this is consistent throughout the whole magazine and when I show the picture of my contents page that will be apparent. Next is the banner headline. The banner headline which is ‘The ultimate guide! Download’ is placed directly in the middle of the page layered above everything else. This is important as it’s a very bad idea to even partially block your headline as that is the most successful way to lure in your readers they need to know immediately what the main feature of the magazine will be so if it interests them they will pick the magazine up and buy it. Next I will discuss if there’s any captions on the cover of which there is. The captions are located on the three images at the bottom of the page these captions are just to make us aware of the three singers name this is used to simply let the readers know who they are and who they’ll be receiving posters of. Also a deck is used on the cover. A deck is where the headline is more than one line which in this case it’s two, ‘The ultimate guide! Download’. The magazine cover also features an exclusive. The exclusive is located at the top of the page ‘Iron Maiden returns: “We’re taking no prisoners”. It’s an exclusive as no other magazine will have the same interview conducted by Kerrang with Iron Maiden therefore it is an exclusive. An ident is featured with the company name Kerrang this is because Kerrang is written in it’s own original font once again this is part of the brands identity. Next I will discuss the layout of the cover. The layout itself is a pretty standard layout with the brand name located at the top with the main picture directly in the middle with the headline layered on top of it with features located at the bottom, this particular layout is a popular convention among music magazines. A strapline is also among the features of the front cover. To see this I will once again use the Iron Maiden exclusive at the top of the page. The quote would be seen as a strapline as it sums up the story of the interview. From reading this you get the idea that the interview will be about Iron Maiden returning with a vengeance, no holds barred etc. Finally tease devices are used within the front cover. These are located on the bottom of the page where Kerrang writes ‘plus!….’ and lists numerous features and band names which if a reader sees a band he/she is fond off they may buy the magazine to see what it’s for. But for me the main tease device is where it says ‘Slam dunk mega-review’ music fans would be very enticed to read on how good or bad the festival was.
Next I will talk about the institution which distributes kerrang, Bauer Media Group.
Bauer Media Group are based in Germany however they possess a British address too. They are highly known for their success in worldwide distribution of magazines.
The audience for kerrang I would say is to people between the ages
of 15-24. I think this because that is this age to most where music is one of the most important aspects of their life, I also think as a secondary audience to people who are interested in fashion as the magazine regularly features trend setters such as Oli Sykes, Hayley Williams etc. And would be targeted at the socio economic groups C2-E.
My covers main representation is music festivals for this particular edition but if it were just a single band it would be easier to list the representations say if there was a well known gay musician, you would write how they represent that gay people can still be fantastic musicians.
Next I will do the LIIAR analysis technique for the contents page and a double page spread from the same magazine.
First I will talk about the language of the two. As previously written one of the most important features in keeping the look and presentation of the magazine professional the house style. As you can see from the attached photo the house style remains consistent from what it was on the front cover of the magazine, black&yellow. However for the double page spread it differs to support and represent the colours and themes of the subject of it’s article Iron Maiden. Which in this case is dark blue.
On the contents page there features a thumbnail this time different to the front cover in the manner of neither have caption, if you look at the picture I provided you will see that on the contents page there is a thumbnail image of famous Guns n Roses guitarist slash, the thumbnail itself is located in a list of articles. He has his own feature in the magazine which is known as anchorage to link the two. However the double page spread features a thumbnail in the top right hand corner of the page and this time unlike the contents page thumbnail example I used is captioned. ‘a sneak preview of the final frontier album artwork’. Now if you look at the background of that double page spread it is a space theme which relates to the name of Iron Maiden’s upcoming album ‘The final frontier’. The headline of the double page spread is not a banner headline as it is not located directly in the middle of the page but it is still layered above the image of the band members. The headline itself boast another aspect of media language in stating before the headline that it’s an exclusive and only this magazine will have this interview. The layout of the double page spread has to adapt to the fact its over two pages so the picture is extremely dominant of the band members with the actual written squeezed in on the far left of the page. This in comparison to the contents page is very different. The contents page is divided into two halves one top one bottom with the main image being on the top and the list of contents being located at the bottom of the page. The logo of Kerrang features on every page either at the bottom next to the page number or in some cases such as the contents page in a sub heading. The target audience remains the same as previously stated apart from it becoming more select for the double page spread obviously big Iron Maiden fans are the target audience of the double spread and not so interesting to people like me for example who don’t care for Iron Maiden. The double page spread also represents the older rock fan. This is apparent to the bands age and the fact they’ve been around for some time now, this is represented in the picture of the band on the page.

LIIAR Analysis of the Brief (Music Magazine)
L-
My front cover of the music magazine I will create will feature a memorable mast head. My current idea for the name is BreakDown, I feel this is suitable to the genre of music i have chosen to base my magazine on. When putting my masthead on my cover it will need to be the second most noticable and dominant thing on the page, obviously the featured picture being first. The picture itself will have to be a medium close up (shoulder and head only). My model on the cover will also be made to make full eye contact with the camera. This is so the reader connects to the men/women on the cover, this technique is very effective.
Another feature will have to be a consistent house style of up to 3 colours, consistency is key for this particular feature this is to keep the appearance of the magazine proffessional rather than making it stupidly colourful this would give the impression of the magazine being very childish. Another apsect of media language I plan to include on my cover is a thumbnail or two referring us to other articles for example a picture of an album cover away from the main picture, with the caption 'check out how BVB's new album Set the world on fire settled in our hq'. Media language such as the price&barcode, competitions and teasing contents possibly along the bottom are usual conventions I could use on my cover such as 'win a signed fender strat signed by BMTH' or along the bottom 'Oli Sykes- I can't f*cking stand....' Lastly I feel a reasonably priced magazine is key in appealing to my audience as my magazine will be weekly and my target audience (13-20) the majority of my readers would be unemplyed and wouldn't be willing to pay unrealistic amounts.
I-
My idea for my college magazine isn't particuarly the most original out there due to my chosen genre is quite popular in attracting companies to make magazines such as Kerrang, RockSound and metal hammer.
So if I were to actually produce a music magazine week in week out for what I'd lack in genre originality I would try make up for in content originality like include more freebies such as posters, stickers etc. Another idea would be toomake my interviews with bands or band memeber more personal a little more in depth ask the questions other magazines don't.
I-
The message I intend to send with my magazine is a very pro rock music one. Meaning I want my the readers of my magazine to get the impression my magazine is purely for them and pushing modern rock music forward and trying to prevent the pop music onslaught. I decided on this message because I feel like the rock music fans out there are the most loyal. What I mean by this is more often than not fans of similar tastes to my magazine tend to buy full albums of their favoured bands, where as from what I understand by talking to people of different musical tastes to me tend have one or two singles per artist. Bear in mind that is just my opinion.
A-
My target audience for my magazine age wise as previously stated 13-20 year olds, so teens to young adults. I chose this as people older tend not to buy music magazines from what I understand. Obviously people who listen to the music featured in my magazine. And my socio-economic group would be (c2-E)

Identify and explain choice of music genre that you will use to base your entire magazine on. (Music Magazine)
After taking time to consider what genre to base my music magazine on I that the genre of my choice would be an assortment of modern rock music aimed at a mostly younger audience due to basing it on modern rock and the many sub genres associated with rock. Genres such as: Metal, Hardcore, Thrash, Punk, Pop Punk, Funk Rock.
Below I will show a few photographic examples of bands I would base in my magazine identify their genre and why they should be suitable. And use photos that could possibly be magazine cover standard with its conventions.
I decided on this particular genre as I believe it to be an ever rising market. More people who listen to the music I decided on are more likely to read a music magazine than say someone who listens to rap, RnB etc. I also decided on it as it’s my favoured type of music and have read many similar magazines. This means I will have more suitable ideas for it then if I were to leave my comfort zone.

Evaluation -
In my final product for my college magazine front cover I decided on my representation being fixated on college students (16-20). I feel I have supported this by using a student as my main picture on the cover of an age which supports the age group I intended to represent.
On my cover I have decided to go against the stereotype of girls being the fashion icons and the gender which dominate talent in textiles by using my model on the cover and naming him the icon and perhaps controversially pinpointing the fact he has received his textiles A2.
I’ve done this in a bid to make my magazine appear slightly less generic than most.
My media product is controversial in some respects as usually the ‘good looking’ highly successful male would be more placed in the ‘jock’ stereotype but instead shown as a male interested in textiles and fashion.
As previously stated I made sure my target audience was reached out to by the usage of a college student for the cover. You could say as a social group my most reached out to group would be the more ‘run of the mill’ character, but still aspects of more individual groups are recognized due to the point of my main story pinpointed on my cover portrays.
The socio economic groups my front cover represents are C-2 – E, mainly because my readers will all be students mostly unemployed if they are employed it will be extremely likely they’ll be working on a low paid manual labour job. With my front cover also I decided in terms of VALS (value life styles) that I would base it on number 4 both inner and outer integrated I chose this as it backs up my previous statements.
For the ideology of my cover I believe my morals and values would be that people can indeed break the stereotypes that are placed on them by society and achieve the previously thought unachievable. I chose to do this as I feel not because its original to do what I did but because so many real life magazines attempt to do this but fail in doing it effectively and I would like to see if I can break the mould as such.
If my magazine were to bought and distributed by a major or minor company I think that due to it being a select audience of people that attend wyke college that only the college itself would acquire the rights to do so but I believe that could make to success of the magazine itself could suffer if due to it probably being sold at a cost.
And finally I will discuss which types of media language I used for my college magazine front cover.
Many bits of media language were used such as banner headline, most importantly codes and conventions which were discussed previously. An exclusive also featured in my magazine obviously as the pupil the headline is based on can only attend one college. My front cover also boasts a house style colour system which contains the official Wyke colours which are green and purple, the colours don’t clash and fit nicely together which I think is shown on my cover. An ident is also present, this is the asterisk located at the bottom of the cover (the official logo of wyke).
For my layout I decided to stick to a more basic of layouts headline on top a main dominant image etc, I did this as I didn’t want to over complicate the cover and cram too much into it. Obviously my cover also contains a masthead which is fairly bold and noticeable (wyke news).
In conclusion I believe my front cover was effective in portraying the key aspects, ideas and codes I set out to show.

work
1,
For the piece of work I will be making a college magazine front cover and the contents page aimed at a specific target audience created on adobe photoshop with my own images all taken on a camera under my usage and ultimately entise readers to pick one up.
The things i need to include to achieve this are things such as colour codes,
interesting headlines and a possibly innovative masthead.
A very important aspect of this is too make it look as professional and believable using bar codes, logos, acnhorage and competitions.
2,
L- Language
it will need to contain aspects and features such as:
mastheads,
bardcodes,
most importantly a MCU (MID CLOSE UP),
a consistant colour style which is house style containing two or three colours,
as previously said anchorage,
competitions,
a memorable title to entise the reader.
I-
a free college magazine produced solo by myself with support from Wyke college, gap in the market as there isnt one.
I-
The message i want my magazine to send out is that a free magazine can be useful and even something entertaining to pick up and look at and show that an average student can succeed in college life.

My target audience is definitely college students as me being one will help to target them and interest them
R-
I plan for magazine to portray my target audience positively saying they're good student but capable of doing better etc.
So i guess they would be seen as stereotypical students rather than the uncoventionally less seen students
I-
a free college magazine produced solo by myself with support from Wyke college, gap in the market as there isnt one.

parts of my magazine assignment, will be uploading the rest soon.
3,
Choice of College.
The college I have chosen to base my college magazine on is the college I attend Wyke college.
I decided on this college due to the fact I believe I would find it easier to include features for my contents page with current activities taking place around the college.
5,
Target Audience.
The target audience for my college magazine in the demographics group would fairly obviously be current students or slightly younger and looking into attending the college so my age rating would be between 15-19.
My magazine would also interest both girls and boys due to the similar percentages in quantity of both genders at the college.
Also the Socio-Economic groups I have chosen to base my magazine around and aim at would be (possibly) D but very much so E.
Now for the psychographics part of explaining my reasoning of target audience.
I believe that my magazine would aim more at the more hardworking student who wishes to strive (achievers) but also if a not so positively motivated student was to read it, it would still apply and attempt to urge them to succeed.
So more aimed towards the inner-directed person.
6,
Price.
I would publish my magazine once a fortnight and release it on the Monday morning free of charge.
My reasoning for all three of my previous ideas follow as:
I would make it free of charge to support my chosen socio-economic group (E),
as most students who aren’t earning money or even if they are wont be willing to fork out money to pay for something of which they are used to be given for free and just flicking through and not really caring for.
My explanation for releasing it on a Monday morning would be that my magazine would contain current events and future events for upcoming two weeks, events such as, enrichment times, social events etc.
And finally my reasoning for selling my magazine once every two weeks.
I feel that students would lose interest quickly if it was weekly as it was free they’d simply feel as if we was overloading them with information it’d be more like a bulletins list rather than a magazine in my opinion, mostly just to prevent my readers from straying away from it.
