Question 3 (music magazine)

Rocksound Magazine.

Now I will be using the LIIAR technique of analysis to analyse the front cover , contents page and double page spread of the widely successful monthly music magazine Rocksound.

The first aspect I will be discussing is media language.

Language-

Firstly I will talk about the masthead featured on the front cover. It’s similar to the kerrang magazine I analysed earlier as the title Rocksound is layered beneath the dominating image of Bring Me The Horizon. This is for the same reason I stated earlier which is as it is famous and well known enough it can afford to do this, people will still be aware their look at or holding a Rocksound magazine. Next I will talk about captions. On both the contents page and my chosen double page spread have captions. If you look on my contents page above the singer it states ‘rocksound finally bringing the nips to page 3’ stated as the singers nipple is on show. This is also an example of intertextuality as it refers to the commonly known Page 3. On the double page spread there is also a caption which is ‘I look back at the person I was and shake my head, but I don’t want to go regretting stuff’. This is also an example of a strapline. Unlike the kerrang magazine I analysed, the house style is consistent throughout the front cover, contents page and the double page spread which is dominantly black and red and white. The particular style of the theme of this edition of the magazine is a sort of robotic theme this is because the strapline on the cover ‘Bring Me The Horizon, the past, the present, the future’. which obviously the robotic theme comes from the reference to the future in the strapline. Next I will analyse the layout of each page. The cover page layout is a fairly generic to the music magazine industry. The simple masthead at the top with the cover artist and story layered above with various subheading spread across the lower regions of the page. Also located on the cover page is teasing devices the main one for me the ‘MCR ‘Danger Days’ Win or Fail?’ this makes the possible reader want to look into the magazine and see whether the album will receive good reviews or not. The layout of the contents page follows as a dominant photo of Architects’ Sam Carter with the main features stacked along the right hand side. There are three thumbnails located on the left hand side of the page of three other bands including reference to the cover band. And finally the layout of my chosen double page spread is that the whole left hand side page is dominated by a picture of the lead singer of the cover band Bring Me The Horizon with a quote from the article. The right hand side page simply states the bands names as a headline with the article below. This time unlike in kerrang there is a byline this is located beneath the article headline ‘words: Andrew Kelham’. As stated earlier its apparent the magazine revolves around them as it’s the only article which remains to use the house style and the futuristic theme.

Audience-

I believe the audience for this magazine to be just a bit higher then the kerrang magazine, so 15-22. I think this as it’s appearance gives the vibe of a more mature magazine. But I’d say the socio economic group remains the same for both this being C2-E. But most importantly the target audience for this particular issue is the more hardcore audience and the die hard Bring Me The Horizon fan as it promises a ten page special so this magazine is a must for all BMTH fans. I’d say if it was more targeted to the male fan unlike kerrang magazine I think this because rarely features females on the cover etc. Where as the kerrang magazine reached out to the female fans by promoting a goddess special poster. But rocksound rarely does that. And finally VALS (value life styles). I would say it belongs to mostly 3 but parts of 4 (
3. groups who are inner-directed – I-am-me, experientals, societally conscious; 4. groups who are both outer and inner directed – integrated.)

Representations-

This edition of rocksound magazine mostly represents the stereotypical modern day youthful bands, heavily tattooed and modern hairstyles. This is important to represent youth for the magazine as I previously stated the target audience is a youthful one. I’d say the cover artists are quite a stereotypical band on appearance due them having the a good looking band in general therefore in some cases being a more successful band.
